A Happy New Year

Today, the 7th of January, is the day we eat "nanakusa-gayu" or seven-herb rice porridge. Seven kinds of spring herbs are put into this porridge. This is based on an old custom of new year, and eating this nanakusa-gayu is to be in good health through the year, and it also means to keep the evils away. Though I couldn't find all the seven kinds, I picked four of these grass in my garden and cooked this rice porridge. The flavour was good and it reminds me of my mom's cooking. She picked one of these grass, nazuna, in spring, boiled them and served it for us. The flavour of nazuna was a sign of spring.
